My two favorite things to pick up.....

Whew, that took some time putting these all in order.  My loose collection of about 250 pipes, suitable for smoking whatever the user feels the urge to.  I think just about every style, size, peg design, period is represented.  Each one once tossed away as rubbish, now a treasure.

This is my favorite pottery on the foreshore.   These will soon become the makings of a nice outdoor table.  I plan on using an old metal table, using a dark grout between the shards, and then overlaying it with a thick poring of liquid acrylic to encase and protect the pottery pieces.  This is 657 pieces, measuring 28 inches by 40 inches.  I would like about 150 more pieces to enlarge it slightly more.

Little Pieces of History.....large amount of imagination..

   While not the grandeur discovery, these little morsels of color, shape and design are still fun to find.  My quest for the Queens jewels continue ( ha ha ), but i'm still having a great time picking up the common mans' junk.  Below is an assortment of pottery, glass, pipes, china and bits and pieces.  Also I managed to take a few pictures along the way.  All comments are welcome, as I am not 100% sure of what each item is.

        It appears as an angel blowing a horn and some person of religious importance.  Comments?

       this is bone, has been hand tooled round, with 4 groves on top, about the size of a 50p coin

     Reverse side of above, obviously tooled, cone shaped, with small hole in center, dept about .3 inch. Use I havent the foggiest idea.

That's about it for my recent trip to the shore.  Good tides and longer days are coming......

Finally a Coin, a Bunch of Marbles, and some other Stuff.....

Well, finally I find a coin and it's so worn I can't read a darn thing on it!  I believe its copper, about the size of a 2 pence coin, but thinner.  Also found two other coin like objects, both also worn beyond readability.  Maybe some electrolysis on them will work.  I  found 5 marbles, and another strange round object, possibly metallic.  A couple of pipes of decent length, a few other metal objects that need the rust taken off them, and a couple of neat porcelain pieces.

     Still a mystery, but I hope to get them cleaned up soon!!

RAIN , Wind and a Strike.......

I wasn't going to venture down to the foreshore the other day, as the weather was terrible, and there was a strike going on in London.  Only a few lines were running on the Tube, and not all stations were being serviced.  However, the Distict line was operational on a limited basis so I put on my raincoat and decided to take a look.  Once on the foreshore, I was blasted by gusty winds and pelting rain.  I managed to pick up a few things, nothing overly exciting.  These two items were of most interest.  I believe the brown pottery shard is from a Bartman jug, however I haven't seen this pattern on any pictures I've seen published on a few blogs.  The other item is a piece  of cut white glass, finely worn down by age.  It is diamond cut, has a hole drilled on the top portion, making me believe it might be from a  chandelier.

"OH MY, that's a BIG PIPE"

One of the lowest tides of the year was Saturday morning, and I had just enough time to venture down to the foreshore to putter around before my flight home.  I expected the ground to be littered with endless treasures, but it wasn't.  The opportunity for pipes was increased, as many are lodged in the muck, and only accessible when the tide is lower than normal.  I picked up a nice assortment of them, some with a decent amount of stem left, others just an interesting bowl.  I took one last look at a spot not ordinarily exposed on low tides, and saw a long stem lying in the sandy soil.  I was going to take it home, as it was the longest stem I had seen, when to my surprise it was intact with a nice bowl.  My heart jumped in excitement, and the day was a complete success.  Funny, just about 5 minutes before I had talked to a young girl on the shore, who was on her first outing ever mudlarking.  She asked me to look at round object she had just picked up.  Guess what?..It was a farthing from the 1680's, tin makeup, with a copper plug in the middle...Karma I guess.  ten minutes on the shore and already a winner!  So, when I found the long pipe I was reminded of my good fortune also.  The rest of the pics are of the rest of my haul for the day.  Pipes, bowls, metal objects, marbles or gaming balls, neat glass and an object I'm not sure is anything, but seems to be, if I could get the encrusted material off the top.  Take a look, offer my some ideas.  Thanks

       Old bottle necks, one still has a cork insert in it.  falls out when dried.  I just like aged look!

       Neat older examples of pottery, with a few green pieces.

        Always on the look out for mocha ware or banded ware, Chinese, or odd.  Round thing I think is top from sugar bowl or creamer!

        Lastly, may be nothing, but it is heavy from buildup, seems symmetrical.  maybe nothing, but would like to remove hardened material to see inside..

        Backside of object, mostly flat. about the size of a pair of airline wings.  Any suggestions as to how to remove material.  It is hard, almost concrete in feel, definitely not hardened clay or mud.
